The boring metal on the right is the same as the mindbendy acid trip weirdness on the left.
They’re both Bismuth, an element on the periodic table.
The shape happens when you let molten Bismuth cool slowly. It crystallises faster on the outside than the inside, so you get the MadHatter’s-stair effect.
The colours are because of a thin layer of Bismuth Oxide on the surface.
I’ve been told you can grow them at home. But that might be a bad idea. I’d set fire to soup.
